Tourist Attractions

Teranga — The Spirit of Welcome

Senegal's tourism is anchored by Gorée Island — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and powerful symbol of the slave trade — and the pink waters of Lac Rose (Retba). The Casamance region in the south is a lush, peaceful paradise of rivers and forests. Saly is the main beach resort area. Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary is a UNESCO site hosting millions of migratory birds. Dakar's vibrant arts scene, music, and cuisine are world-class.

Lodging & Hotels

Boutique Charm to International Hotels

Dakar has a good range of accommodation. The Radisson Blu, Terrou-Bi, and King Fahd Palace are top international options. Boutique hotels in the Plateau and Almadies areas offer character and proximity to the ocean. Saly has numerous beach resorts. Casamance offers eco-lodges and campements (community lodges) for an authentic experience.

Housing & Real Estate

Affordable and Growing

Dakar's real estate market is more affordable than Lagos or Accra. The Almadies, Ngor, and Les Mamelles areas are popular with returnees and expats — ocean views and modern amenities. Plateau is the historic centre. Point E and Fann Résidence are established residential neighbourhoods. Rents range from $300/month for a basic apartment to $1,500+ for a villa in Almadies. Foreigners can own property.

Healthcare

French-Standard Private Care

Dakar has good private healthcare options by West African standards. Clinique du Cap, Clinique Pasteur, and Hôpital Principal de Dakar offer reliable care. French-trained doctors are common. Medical evacuation to France or Morocco is available for serious conditions. Health insurance from international providers is recommended for returnees.

Food & Cuisine

Thiéboudienne and Ocean Freshness

Senegalese cuisine is considered one of West Africa's finest. Thiéboudienne (rice and fish) is the national dish — a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Yassa (chicken or fish in onion-lemon sauce), mafé (peanut stew), and thiébou yapp (rice and meat) are beloved. Dakar's restaurant scene is excellent — La Calebasse, Chez Loutcha, and Le Lagon are favourites. Fresh Atlantic seafood is exceptional.

Immigration & Visas

ECOWAS Free Movement + Welcoming Policy

Senegal is one of Africa's most welcoming countries for visitors and returnees. ECOWAS citizens have free movement. Most other nationalities receive a 90-day visa-free entry. The government's Sénégalais de l'Extérieur programme supports diaspora investment and return. Residence permits are available for investors and retirees. Senegal has a strong tradition of political stability.

Transportation

New Airport, Growing Infrastructure

Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS), opened in 2017, is Dakar's modern gateway — 45km from the city centre. The TER (Train Express Régional) connects the airport to Dakar in 45 minutes. Dakar's BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) is improving urban mobility. Taxis and ride-hailing (Yango, InDriver) are the main urban options. Inter-city travel by sept-place (shared taxi) is common.

Safety & Security

One of West Africa's Safest Countries

Senegal is one of West Africa's most politically stable and safe countries. Violent crime against foreigners is rare. Petty theft occurs in tourist areas and markets. The Casamance region had a long-running low-level conflict — largely resolved but check current advisories. Dakar's Almadies and Plateau areas are considered very safe. Emergency: 17 (police).
