Tourist Attractions

Safari Capital of the World

Kenya is synonymous with safari. The Maasai Mara National Reserve hosts the Great Migration — one of nature's greatest spectacles. Amboseli National Park offers iconic views of Kilimanjaro with elephants in the foreground. The Kenyan coast — Mombasa, Diani Beach, Lamu — is a paradise of white sand and Swahili culture. Nairobi itself has the world's only national park within a capital city. Mount Kenya is Africa's second-highest peak.

Lodging & Hotels

Safari Lodges to City Hotels

Nairobi has excellent international hotels — the Radisson Blu, Tribe Hotel, and Villa Rosa Kempinski are top choices. Safari lodges in the Mara range from luxury tented camps (Angama Mara, Mahali Mzuri) to mid-range options. Mombasa and Diani have beach resorts for every budget. Serviced apartments in Westlands, Kilimani, and Karen are popular with returnees.

Nairobi's real estate market is one of Africa's most active. Karen, Runda, and Muthaiga are the premium residential areas — spacious homes with gardens and security. Westlands and Kilimani offer modern apartments popular with young professionals and returnees. Lavington and Gigiri (near UN headquarters) are also sought-after. Rents range from $400/month for a basic apartment to $3,000+ for a Karen villa.

Healthcare

East Africa's Medical Hub

Nairobi is East Africa's medical tourism destination. Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi Hospital, and MP Shah Hospital offer world-class care. The Karen Hospital and Gertrude's Children's Hospital are also highly regarded. NHIF (National Hospital Insurance Fund) provides basic coverage; private insurance is recommended for returnees. Pharmacies are well-stocked in urban areas.

Food & Cuisine

Nyama Choma and Coastal Spice

Kenyan cuisine centres on nyama choma (roasted meat), ugali (maize porridge), sukuma wiki (collard greens), and pilau rice. The coast brings Swahili flavours — biryani, samosas, and fresh seafood. Nairobi's restaurant scene is cosmopolitan — Carnivore Restaurant is a legendary institution. The Maasai Market and City Market are great for street food. Craft beer and coffee culture are thriving.

Matatus (minibuses) are the local transit backbone. Uber and Bolt operate in Nairobi. The Nairobi Expressway has significantly reduced city traffic.

Safety & Security

Safe Capital, Coastal Awareness

Nairobi is generally safe in residential and business areas. Karen, Runda, and Westlands are considered very safe. Petty crime occurs in the CBD and crowded areas. The northeast (near Somali border) and some coastal areas require caution — check current advisories. Nairobi has a strong expat and returnee community with established safety networks. Emergency: 999 or 112.
